Idea
The avatar (on a high bridge) drops Tetris shapes into the chasm. Once their pile is high enough for him to jump down without fall damage, he descends and - by walking on the top surface - can now (hopefully) reach a cave entrance in the side wall.
Option: He's unable to jump down (or climb up) more than 1 unit, therefor has to build some kind of staircase. He also can't jump over floor gaps wider than ½ a unit.

Side note: The horizontal coordinate raster of the Tetris shapes (thus the avatar's drop positions too) is ½ unit, because rotations are anchored in the true center point of a shape's bounding box, which may lead to such an offset.
